The love of Two Dogs

I have been sprawling on the sofa this evening, watching New Tricks, which I really enjoy. James Bolam - remember The Likely Lads? God, that makes me feel old, I believe he is about 70!

Along the back of the sofa lay Billy, his head hanging down, under my chin, his cold wet nose up close and personal. His fur is so sensual, soft and silk velvety, his floppy ears so wonderful to stroke. He makes the most wonderful noises, a sort of grunty snort of sheer pleasure. His eyes on a level with mine, they are suffused with love. I just adore this dog, the bond with him is total - the result of breeding a dog and knowing that he is yours unreservedly. Maud snuggled up at my side, a weather eye fixed on Billy, jealousy in every bone of her body. From time to time. her lips curled back in a silent snarl as she thought he was getting too close to me. She expects Billy to know his place, Billy pushes the boundaries, and I think it is hysterically funny, until Maud gets nasty, and Billy draws back, a wounded look on his face.

These dogs are my life - the companionship they offer is so rewarding. When Violet died, I thought nothing would heal the pain and sense of loss, but these dear dogs have filled the void, and how I love them. A little triumvirate - we face the world together, and let noone part us asunder.

I miss my dear, departed "Lizzie" so much...I have two cats, one of whom is no problem, but no love..the other, much love, but a real "problem child"..that said..I have a husband, who says we can't afford to get a dog. We live in the States, and there's this recession going on..and they are expensive, yadadayada..and so on..

I know you have been through hell, but you had the courage to go on...my husband has hurt me, as well..physically and emotionally.
Just yesterday, I had a nurse, with her nose in my face, tell me that, "there will come a time, when he will either kill you, or put you in a vegetative state"...

I am 61, an out-of-work interior designer, and nowhere to go...I feel like a whore and a fraud...you have your dogs, friends, pride, books, children...good for you...I admire you greatly

The love to and from a pet is wonderful, especially dogs. Plus they are so entertaining!(Billy & Maud sound very funny!)

I adore my two dogs. Daisy and Millie. Two gorgeous little Westhighland White Terriers. So much trouble but so much love!

They've helped me through some terrible times, as yours have done too.

Oh I can so relate to your love for them. I have simliar relationships with my bunnies, particularly my 11-year old blind little boy, Wooley. I've raised them to be 'children'; they are family members, the follow me around the house, watch tv and study with me, and Wooley has traveled to DC and TX, and all over CA. He's on his last few weeks/months (I'm saying that with hope), and I will deeply miss him. Thank God for our loving pets!

I want to apologize for my "outburst"...just thought that this was about life with men..or without...but, you are all right; it's about recovery...no bad stuff.
So sorry...

I was referred here by your daughter, LLG. I'm glad she "sent" me, because the writing is engaging and intelligent and takes me away.

It's easy to see where she got her talent.
